European Form. Botanical Soul.
A coffee cup and saucer in the Butterfly manner — the same hand-painted multi-species butterflies as the rest of the collection, here placed on a tall, straight-sided European cup form with a scrolled handle, the whole set lighter and more restrained than the gaiwan.
The Cup
A tall, gently tapered cylinder in high-white porcelain, its exterior divided by soft vertical ribs into shallow panels. Two or three butterflies are placed freely across the panels — a small gold-toned specimen, a red-brown one near the handle — their scale deliberately small against the white ground. The rim is traced in a fine gold line. The handle is a European scroll form — a double S-curve with a small upturned tip at the top, its outer face carrying a single butterfly. The interior is plain white.
The Saucer
A wide, flat disc with a scalloped petal edge traced in fine gold, its surface scattered with four or five butterflies in full colour — morpho blue upper left, monarch orange lower right, sulphur yellow beside it, two smaller grey specimens filling the negative space. A plain white centre circle receives the cup.
