The hairy crab season is one of the great rituals of Chinese autumn — a moment when the table becomes a celebration. This plate arrives at that table already dressed for the occasion: red tassel cord looped and knotted across ivory white, blue crabs rendered in loose ink-wash strokes, a fine gold rim holding the composition at its edge.

Form & Decoration

A wide, exceptionally shallow plate in glossy ivory porcelain, its profile so low and flat that from the side it reads as a single curved line — the silhouette of a magnolia petal at rest. The surface is painted with a continuous red silk tassel cord that loops and knots at the centre in the manner of a Chinese decorative knot, its two tasselled ends falling freely toward the rim. Between the cord, two blue crabs are placed with the casualness of a sketch — precise enough to be recognisable, loose enough to feel alive. A fine gold line traces the rim, completing the composition without interrupting it.
