A Leaf, Drawn in Red.
The Lang Red Leaf Plate is shaped like a broad tropical leaf — pointed at one end, rounded at the other, with a profile so thin and flat it barely casts a shadow. Across its entire white surface, dense parallel lines of deep crimson run in two directions, meeting at a central spine in a herringbone pattern that mirrors the veining of a real leaf. The lines are hand-drawn, slightly varied in weight and spacing, with the energy of something made quickly and with complete confidence.
The red is lang hong — Lang Red — a colour with deep roots in Chinese ceramic tradition, named after the Qing dynasty official Lang Tingji under whose patronage it was perfected. On a white ground, it reads as vivid and graphic as a woodblock print. The rim lifts slightly at the edges, giving the plate a gentle curvature that makes it look, from the side, like a leaf caught mid-fall.
