An Ancient Symbol, Recast in Porcelain.
The Ruyi sceptre has been carried by emperors, gifted between scholars, and placed on altars for over two thousand years. Its name means as you wish — a blessing compressed into an object, a gesture made permanent in material. This is that object, reimagined for the contemporary interior.
Form
At 34 centimetres long and 4.2 centimetres wide, this Ruyi occupies space with the quiet confidence of something that knows exactly what it is. The left end opens into a wide, flat circular head — a disc of pure white porcelain with a gently lobed rim, its surface smooth and slightly domed, catching light the way a full moon catches water. The handle rises from it in a long, arching curve — bowing upward at the centre like a bridge seen from the bank of a river — before descending to a small, precise octagonal tail that closes the composition with the finality of a seal.
At the midpoint of the handle, a rectangular open frame interrupts the form — a window cut through the porcelain that lightens the piece visually and structurally, allowing light to pass through and casting a shadow that changes with the hour. It is the detail that makes this Ruyi unmistakably contemporary while remaining entirely faithful to its classical origins.
Finish
Matte ivory-white glaze throughout — not the cold white of clinical surfaces, but the warm, slightly chalky white of unglazed Song dynasty ware, soft to the eye and smooth to the touch. No decoration. No colour. The form carries everything.
How to Use It
Display horizontally on a shelf, tray, or altar surface. Rest it across a ceramic stand or lacquer box. Gift it at a wedding, housewarming, or new year — the Ruyi has always been the most considered gift one can give. Or simply keep it for yourself, as a daily reminder that beauty and intention are not luxuries but necessities.
