Frozen in the Kiln
The Snowflake Crackle Plate looks like a moment caught mid-transformation — a surface of pale grey-white ice fractures spreading across a deep black ground, each crack defined by a fine dark line that maps the glaze like a topographic record of the firing. No two plates crack the same way. No two are identical.
The crackle glaze effect — known in Chinese ceramic tradition as binglie (ice crackle) — is produced by the tension between glaze and clay body as they cool at different rates in the kiln. The result is a surface that looks geological, almost alive. The rim catches the light differently from the centre, shifting from pale silver-grey to a cooler blue-grey depending on the angle.
The profile is shallow and wide — a flat, generous surface ideal for plating. The base is a solid matte black, grounding the drama of the surface with quiet weight.
