Primitive Form. Deliberate Imperfection.

The Wabi-Sabi Charred Wood Tea Table is not furniture in the conventional sense. It is a sculptural object that happens to hold things. Hewn from solid wood and finished with a deep charcoal-black carbonisation treatment, it stands on three or four thick, irregular legs — each one slightly different in angle and girth, as if they grew that way. The top surface is worked with visible arc-gouge marks and hand-tool traces, left intentionally unsmoothed. The edges are raw and uneven. Nothing has been corrected.

The aesthetic is rooted in wabi-sabi — the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection, incompleteness, and the passage of time. The charring process (a technique related to the Japanese shou sugi ban method) deepens the grain, hardens the surface, and produces a matte black finish that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. The result is an object that feels ancient and entirely contemporary at the same time.

Use & Placement

Designed as a low tea table, display plinth, or sculptural accent piece. Use it to elevate a tea set, a ceramic object, a candle, or a single stem. Equally at home on a tatami floor, a concrete surface, or a raw timber shelf. Wipe clean with a dry or lightly damp cloth. Do not submerge in water.
